Iowa State Fair Grounds Des Moines, IA

Mid-Iowa Driving at the 2016 Iowa Horse Fair

MIDA has a long history of participation at the Iowa Horse Fair.   Since the 2nd Horse Fair we have either had a demonstration of horse drawn vehicles or had a large display of vehicles.  Those displays have been in the Varied Industries Building, The Cattle Barn and the area between the Jacobson Center and the Horse Barn.  For many many years Julie Siebert and Max Worthington took charge and set up a booth that all us could be proud of and their participation was truly appreciated!

This year we have our large space back in the cattle barn.  Unfortunately, many of our board members will be at Waverly at the Draft Horse Sale which this year falls on the same weekend!!  For a while it looked like our long reign of participation at the Horse Fair was going to come to an end!  I just couldn’t stand to see that happen so kicking and screaming I agreed to come to the fair grounds on Thursday and set up our booth so now I need your help!!

Here is your chance to help out our club.  As with so many organizations, it seems that the board does the majority of the planning and carrying out of the events.  Here is what we need from you!

Attend the membership meeting in Maxwell on the March 20th and sign up to bring a vehicle for display and to man the booth for a 2 hours stint.

Bring a vehicle for the display.  We need a nice assortment and would welcome a horse drawn farm implement as well.  I will be there on Thursday morning to begin putting our booth together.  You may bring your vehicle Thursday or Friday morning before 11:00 am.  If you can’t get away during the week Phil and Linda have made arrangements to have the horse barn open the Saturday before the Horse Fair (March 26th).   Phil will  be dropping off the decorative fencing as well as our flags and a Meadowbrook for the display.  I will move all the vehicles and other equipment to the Cattle barn on Thursday.  If you happen to have a vehicle there at the Horse Fair for another demonstration please consider putting it in our display while you are not using it.

Sign up to man the booth sometime Friday afternoon, Saturday or Sunday.  I will be putting together a sign-up sheet and have it at the meeting on March 20th.    All you really need to do is be able to talk to visitors about horses and buggies!  In my experience a lot of it was listening to tales of “grandpa’s buggy”!  We will have the summers drive schedule, membership forms and fliers on our clinic available for you to hand out.  Please consider doing this for our club so the same folks don’t have to spend 4-6 hours being sure that the booth is manned.

I know that some of you will be unable to attend the meeting so please do not let that stop you from bringing a vehicle and sitting in the booth.  Call me at 641-484-4784 or email samckeeiowatelecom [dot] net and get signed up for a slot.  Also if there is a time that you really want and you will be at the meeting go ahead and let me know now and beat the rush!!

Looking forward to a fun 2016 Iowa Horse Fair!
